31/03/2006 Island to host major health & safety conference

UP TO 250 delegates are expected to attend a national health & safety conference being staged in Guernsey next year.

The 2007 Electricity Industry Safety, Health & Environment Management conference will take place next April, and is being brought to the island and hosted by Guernsey Electricity.

The annual two day conference is organised by the Energy Networks Association (ENA), a representative body for the UK’s electricity and gas suppliers. It is hosted by a different member company each year, and regularly attracts around 250 delegates.

In the past the event has been staged in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Guernsey is believed to be the first venue outside the UK.

Guernsey Electricity managing director Ian Watson said it was a prestigious event to host.

‘This is a must-attend event for anyone in the electricity industry with responsibility for any aspect of safety, health and environment. We are very privileged to be hosting it, and I am sure it is going to be a great showcase for the island,’ he said.

Guernsey Electricity generation manager Tom Woodford has been a member of the organising committee for this year’s conference. It takes place in London next week, hosted by National Grid, and companies are paying more than £640 per delegate to attend.

Guernsey Electricity will have a stand at the accompanying trade exhibition, where it will be giving out information packs with details of the island and arrangements for the 2007 conference.
