MAINTAINING capacity for full on-island electricity generation is helping to ensure the island continues to enjoy a secure and reliable supply. A comprehensive review of UK energy policy has highlighted security of supply as one of the greatest challenges in the future. The report, which was published this week, stresses the importance of maintaining a diverse range of energy sources, including nuclear and renewables as well as fossil fuels. Guernsey Electricity managing director Ian Watson said the company recognised the enormous importance of security and reliability, which is why it continues to maintain a diversity of supply. Although up to 80% of Guernsey’s electricity is now imported from Europe, via the submarine cable link, the Vale Power Station still has sufficient capacity to meet all local demand. Mr Watson said the strategic benefits of maintaining the capacity for full on-island generation, in addition to the cable link, outweighed the cost implications. ‘A secure and reliable electricity supply is absolutely essential to the quality of life of islanders and the success of local business. It is therefore our primary focus as a company,’ he said. ‘What the cable link has provided us with, above all else, is security. We are no longer wholly reliant on on-island generation for all our energy requirements, but we have that ability in reserve in the event of a problem with our connection to the European Grid.’ The UK review also highlights the use of renewable energy as an increasingly important component of future policy. Mr Watson said the company’s investment in tidal power research could provide the island with a valuable source of electricity in the future. Initial trials have indicated this technology may be ideally suited to local waters, and as well as providing renewable energy it could also ensure further diversification. ‘What the UK review highlights above all else, I think, is the importance of having the right mix of energy. What the government has said is renewables are a key part solution, but so too is nuclear and fossil fuel-based generation,’ he said. ‘Energy efficiency also has a significant part to play in terms of reducing demand, and we would support that also. However no one approach and no single technology is going to provide a solution to the issues of security and climate change. What you have to do is get the balance right.’ |
