When properly installed, an air-source heat pump can deliver three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. For every 1 kilowatt or electricity used to run the heat pump, up to 3 kilowatts of useful heat is provided

Air-source heat pumps can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -20°C, so Guernsey's mild climate presents no problem.

How Do Air-Source Heat Pumps Work?

Usually placed outdoors at the side or back of a property, air-source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air using the same principle that allow fridges to extract heat from their insides. 

  1.  The air-source heatpump uses a fan to draw air into it and over a heat exchanger, which contains a refrigerant liquid
  2. An evaporator uses the latent heat from the air to heat the refrigerant liquid sufficiently until it boilers and turns into a gas
  3. This gas is then compressed which causes it to significantly increase in temperature
  4. An additional heat exchanger removes the heat from the refrigerant (turning it back into liquid) and using it to heat the water for your heating system

What type of heating does an air-source heat pump work with?

Heat pumps work much more efficiently at a lower temperature than a standard boiler system would. This makes them more suitable for underfloor heating systems or larger radiatorswhich give out heat at lower temperatures over longer periods of time.
