GEL partner with Ladies’ College to deliver more local renewables for all.

Works undertaken by Guernsey Electricity, in conjunction with Little Green to install a community-scale solar array on the roof of The Ladies’ College in Les Gravées is now live and generating.

The new community array forms part of the pipeline of projects designed to increase the amount of energy generated on-island from renewable sources, ensuring that all our customers can access locally generated, clean solar energy.

The installation of 292 photovoltaic (PV) panels will generate an estimated 127,900 units to be fed back into the local network, within the first year - this is enough electricity to power around 34 homes, which will make it the third largest PV scale on-Island and follows similar projects completed over the past three years at Guernsey Post, King George V Playing Fields and the Waste Transfer Station.

Jon Sexton, Head of Engineering & Design at Guernsey Electricity, said: “We are delighted to work with The Ladies’ College and in conjunction with the Little Green Energy Company as part of the pipeline of projects designed to increase the amount of energy generated on-island from renewable sources. We fully support renewable energy and will continue to invest in large community scale solar arrays in order to benefit all customers fairly. The electricity feeds directly into the Island’s network so that all our customers can access locally generated, clean solar energy.”

The Ladies’ College celebrated its 150th anniversary last year, and it is fitting that we continue to play an important part in the local community through this new and exciting initiative. As a school we are constantly looking how we can improve our environmental impact, whether that’s through waste reduction or this particular project.

Daniele Harford-Fox, Principal of The Ladies’ College.

Guernsey Electricity’s climate change statement and five year Environmental Sustainability Strategy includes a target of installing up to 20MW of community solar PV by 2050.

Investing in solar technology on a large scale is the right step to take for the environment and our customers here on island - as we plan and determine the future of where our energy comes from and how we use it - it's these community scale projects that will really transform the network and our ability to balance it with a mix of generation sources.
