Delivering the energy transition

Following the States of Guernsey's approval to begin implementing the island's Electricity Strategy, the number of road closures will increase so we can upgrade Guernsey's network of underground cables.

The system that powers everything we do is buried beneath our feet.

It's our team that needs to replace a grid originally designed to supply the demand of 20th-century Guernsey with an infrastructure that can power our busy modern lives.

But we do understand how frustrating roadworks can be. As we don't use overhead power lines in Guernsey, the bulk of our network is underground cabling which means you'll probably notice more roadworks around as we modernise the island's electricity system.

Following the States approval of the Electricity Strategy in 2023, our team are well underway implementing the Energy Transition which involves a staged upgrade of the electricity network from 2023 to 2050.

Guernsey Electricity Infrastructure Plans

Below we've listed Guernsey Electricity's roadwork plans for 2024.

As much of the work needs permission and consultation with various stakeholders, there's no guarantee that these listed plans will necessarily go ahead and specific dates may change. However as of the time of writing, the following information is correct.

Jargon translation

Green Sector This refers to a section of the island covering the South/South East Corner of Guernsey which currently is the area most affected by supply overload.
HV High Voltage
LV Low Voltage
Fibre optic ducting A system of protective channels or conduits designed to house and safeguard fibre optic cables for data transmission.
Jointing Connecting and sealing electrical cables or wires to ensure a safe and efficient flow of electricity

11 February - 19 April 2024

Prince Albert Road - Closure 1

Install HV, LV & fibre optic ducting to enable new PEH transformers to supply Green Sector (South/ South East Corner of the island) and help reduce current overloading in the Green Sector.

Status:

Approved

15 May to 30 October 2024

Doyle Road - Full Closure

Phase 2 will involve an overlay of LV cables in Doyle Road to increase LV capacity, and install a new 8-way LV Distribution pillar in Doyle Road.

To provide the residents in this area with better access to electrical infrastructure for future installations such as electric heating and EV charging, we'll also upgrade all (47) Doyle Road services and install HV ducting for future strategic use.

Status:

We'll upgrade HV cabling between the Richmond substation and the PEH and complete an LV overlay in Mount Row. Additional load applications in this area are being refused at this time as the current LV network is at capacity so this upgrade should free up load in the area for additional electrical installations for residents.

Please note, over some weekends this closure will clash with planned works by Guernsey Water in Bailiff's Crossroads so diversion routes over these weekends may be longer.
