The system that powers everything we do is buried beneath our feet.
It's our team that needs to replace a grid originally designed to supply the demand of 20th-century Guernsey with an infrastructure that can power our busy modern lives.
But we do understand how frustrating roadworks can be. As we don't use overhead power lines in Guernsey, the bulk of our network is underground cabling which means you'll probably notice more roadworks around as we modernise the island's electricity system.
Following the States approval of the Electricity Strategy in 2023, our team are well underway implementing the Energy Transition which involves a staged upgrade of the electricity network from 2023 to 2050.
Guernsey Electricity Infrastructure Plans
Below we've listed Guernsey Electricity's roadwork plans for 2024.
As much of the work needs permission and consultation with various stakeholders, there's no guarantee that these listed plans will necessarily go ahead and specific dates may change. However as of the time of writing, the following information is correct.
Jargon translation
Green Sector | This refers to a section of the island covering the South/South East Corner of Guernsey which currently is the area most affected by supply overload. |
HV | High Voltage |
LV | Low Voltage |
Fibre optic ducting | A system of protective channels or conduits designed to house and safeguard fibre optic cables for data transmission. |
Jointing | Connecting and sealing electrical cables or wires to ensure a safe and efficient flow of electricity |
