Monthly Meets- Meet Carolina

Monthly Meets is a chance to peek behind the scenes at Guernsey Electricity where we’ll shine a spotlight on our most important asset: our employees. To celebrate International Women’s Day we’re highlighting the important role of the women who help shape the energy transition and beyond.

Just in time for International Women’s Day, this month we meet Project Manager Carolina Atala who tells us a bit about what it’s like to be a female project manager during the sustainable energy transition.

What is your role at Guernsey Electricity and why did you join?

“I’m currently working as a Project Manager within our Project Management Office.

My decision to join Guernsey Electricity was fuelled by a genuine interest in exploring diverse systems and contributing to impactful projects within the energy industry. I’m passionate about applying my engineering expertise to ensure successful project outcomes and further contribute to Guernsey Electricity’ Limited’s growth and success.

I believe that my multidisciplinary approach and commitment align well with GEL's objectives, and I’m excited about the prospect of contributing to the organisation's continued excellence.”

Have you worked in any other industry?

“Yes, I have a diverse professional background that spans across different industries.

For example I've worked as a manager in Facility Management, in production project management, and production engineering across various sectors. All these  experiences have provided me with a broad skillset and a versatile approach to problem-solving.”

What is your proudest moment since working at Guernsey Electricity so far?

“The successful initiation and progress of multiple projects since I joined in October 2023. I managed eight projects simultaneously, which has been both challenging and rewarding. Ensuring the success of these projects, working collaboratively with the team, and contributing to Guernsey Electricity’s objectives has provided me with a real sense of accomplishment.

I’m excited about the ongoing projects and the opportunities they present for continued success and growth within Guernsey Electricity.”

What is a challenge you have faced, as a woman, working in a typically male dominated industry?

“The energy world is generally considered a male-dominated industry, and navigating this can present its own set of challenges.

One significant difficulty has been breaking through gender stereotypes and prejudices. Specifically jumping the hurdles of preconceived notions about roles and capabilities needs additional effort and energy. However, I see these challenges as great opportunities for growth and change. By focusing on my skills, knowledge, and results, I aim to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse work environment."

What advice would you give women wanting to work as part of the sustainable energy transition?

“My advice is to embark on this journey with passion, purpose, and confidence. Knowledge is power-so educate yourself about sustainable energy practices, technologies, and the broader environmental landscape. And remember to stay curious and keep learning.

Education in environmental science or engineering can provide a solid foundation for a wide variety of roles.”

What do you believe is the biggest challenge the next generation of women face?

“Overcoming the established gender stereotypes that persist in different aspects of society will be a primary challenge.

Despite significant progress, women might encounter barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields and leadership roles. It's essential to continue challenging societal norms, advocating for equal opportunities, and establishing cultures  that embrace diversity and inclusion. By supporting each other and pushing against these challenges, the next generation of women can pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive future.”

What woman inspires you the most? And why?

“Lillian Gilbreth is a great inspiration to me her ground-breaking work in the field of industrial engineering and her ability to balance a successful career with raising twelve children is truly inspiring.  She made significant contributions to efficiency and productivity in various industries, emphasising time and motion studies.

What truly resonates with me about Lillian Gilbreth is her approach to problem-solving. She didn't just focus on optimising processes in the workplace; she also emphasized the importance of well-being and efficiency in daily life.”

How would you empower women around you?

“As a woman in Mechanical Engineering and project leadership, I believe in supporting and empowering women around me.

I mentor and share my experiences to help others navigate their careers and advocate for diversity, ensuring diverse voices are heard in the workplace. I also engage in initiatives promoting women in STEM  (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to inspire the next generation. Empowering women is about creating a collective momentum where we support each other, break barriers, and redefine possibilities in our chosen fields.”

What advice would you give your younger self?

“I would say: the world you desire is right before you, and within you lies strength and confidence that will unlock endless possibilities. Trust in your abilities, believe in your dreams, and embrace the journey with courage. You have the power to achieve everything you want. Stay true to yourself, stay resilient, and appreciate every moment. The future is bright, and you are unstoppable!”

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

“International Women's Day holds a special significance as it celebrates the incredible achievements of women across various industries. As someone who has navigated roles in production engineering, and project management, I see this day as a powerful reminder of the diverse talents, strengths, and resilience that women bring to the professional world. It's an occasion to honour the progress made towards gender equality, reflect on the challenges we've overcome, and inspire future generations to continue pushing boundaries for a more inclusive and equitable future.”

How does your role impact everyday lives?

“As a Project Manager my role has a direct impact on everyday lives by ensuring the successful delivery of projects critical to modern island life. From initiating projects to managing budgets and resources, my focus is on improving efficiency and achieving project objectives. This, in turn, contributes to creating better facilities and environments for the community here in Guernsey, positively influencing their daily experiences at work and at home.”

Why do you think diversity in the workplace is important?

“As a Project Manager in the energy industry, I think diversity in the workplace is crucial. It helps us approach challenges from different angles, cultivating innovation, and can ultimately lead to better project outcomes. In my experience, diverse teams bring unique perspectives that contribute to a more effective and collaborative working environment.”
