If you want to save money on your electricity bill and reduce your carbon footprint, set the timers on your electricals to run or charge your appliances between 11pm and 5am.
Particularly when the winter nights are drawing in and the temperatures are falling, shifting as much electricity use to the nightshift is really critical.
Set your electricals to work cleaner and cheaper
Night shift: 11pm - 5am

Why is using electricity off-peak so important?
Did you know that over 90% of Guernsey’s electricity is imported via a subsea cable from Europe through Jersey?
Between 11pm and 5am, every night of the year, Guernsey doesn’t generate any electricity on-island using fossil-fuels at the Vale power station. That means during these quiet, off-peak hours, your electricals are powered using 100% low-carbon electricity imported from the European grid.
By simply shifting when you use certain devices and appliances, you can save money and reduce your carbon footprint.
What can I do to save money and carbon?
Running devices and appliances between 11pm and 5am avoids electricity peak demand periods and means you're guaranteed to be using cleaner, greener energy without relying on fossil-fuels.
Small changes which have a big impact not only on your bill but on our island too.
Try setting timers on home devices and appliances including:
- Hot water cylinder timers
- Washing machines
- Dishwashers
- Tumble dryers
- Electric vehicle charging points
- Charging other electricals
What if I need to run something during the day?
In the winter it won’t be as clean to use as overnight, but you can use your two-hour cheap rate times during the day.
This will be cheaper than other daytime hours, and will spread electricity demand more evenly throughout the day.
When are my cheap rate times?
Your cheap rate times are not changing, 11pm to 5am is just the best time for everyone to use electricity as it’s when the power station is not needed to generate electricity.
Check the back of your electricity statement for your specific time bands under the section called Electricity Billing Calculations.
It also tells you what percentage of cheap rate units you’re currently using, and we recommend you aim to use over 50% during your cheap rate, low carbon times to really reap the benefits.
