We’re opening our gates to curious islanders, so join us for an exclusive, free tour of the Vale Power Station for a rare chance to see the sheer scale of some of the machinery and infrastructure behind your every switch.
Why join the tour?
Maybe you’ve driven past the power station a few times, or just seen the chimneys on the horizon? Now it’s time to take a step inside and see it from the frontline.
- Scale you need to see to believe – stand alongside some of the huge engines that serve as our island’s primary power backup
- Hidden Guernsey – be guided through some places usually strictly off-limits to the public
- Meet the people behind the light switch – have a chat with some of the team keeping the grid stable 24/7
- Our future – learn how your daily habits (such as using off-peak electricity) will help reduce local air pollution and help manage future tariff increases
When do the tours take place?
We're running ten free tours between April and August for groups of 20 people over 16 years old to join us on tour.
Sign up quickly. Tours we’ve run in the past have been really popular.
We’ll release invites in waves over the coming months, so make sure you’re following Guernsey Electricity on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn social media and signed up for our newsletter to stay in the know.
Why are you running power station tours?
We import around 90% of the island's electricity via a subsea cable from low-carbon, renewable sources in Europe. The rest of islander's electricity demand is generated here on island at the Vale Power Station.
That extra top up (or back up, if ever we can't rely on the subsea cable imports) needs to deliver a huge amount of electricity during peak times, so we think it's important for islanders to get a feel for how it all works while it works hard in their back yards.
In our tours, we'll walk you around some of the enormous machinery needed to generate enough electricity to supply 100% of the islander's electricity needs if ever we needed to call on the power station as a back-up. We'll take you through some of the places in Guernsey most people don't get to see and talk about how every small action you take will make a big difference, both in local air pollution and future tariff increases.
What should I wear?
It’s a working industrial site, so please wear study, closed-toe footwear (and no high heels please). We’ll provide the hard hats and high viz.
How do I sign up?
