How to work a storage heater

How to work your storage heater

If you currently have a storage heater and are unsure if you're using it properly, we hope these links are helpful.

If you have an older storage heater, there is likely to be two settings you'll need to consider to get the most out of your heating system.

Input Setting

This controls how much heat your storage heater will take in overnight. If you expect a cold day tomorrow, increase the input so more heat is stored. For milder weather, reduce the input so you don’t feel too hot. Generally people manually increase the settings during winter and reduce it during spring and autumn when the temperatures are warmer.

Output Setting

This manages how much stored heat is released during the day. Keep it low during times you’re not at home and increase it when you need warmth – although please bear in mind your storage heater works like a battery and will run out of heat faster if the output temperature is higher.

What does your storage heater look like?

See the links below for specific instructions on how to set up your off-peak storage heater.

Dimplex XLS Storage Heater

If your radiator looks like this with two dials at the top, you've got an XLS storge heater.

These storage heaters can come in different sizes for different rooms so yours may be bigger or smaller than the radiator in this image.

Remember that the 'Input' dial on the right controls how much heat your storage heater will take in overnight, so please do not use this to control how much heat you need right now.
